iPhone Dev Team Provides More Details About 'Spirit' Jailbreak; Might Not Be Released Today

iPhone Dev Team Provides More Details About 'Spirit' Jailbreak; Might Not Be Released Today

iPhone Dev Team has published a post providing more details about the ‘Spirit’ jailbreak that Comex is planning to release shortly that can jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 for all iPhone and iPod Touches and iPhone OS 3.2 for iPad.

The ‘Spirit’ jailbreak is the first userland jailbreak since iPhone firmware 1.x, which allowed users to jailbreak their iPhone using Mobile Safari.

Here are some useful details about the ‘Spirit’ jailbreak that will be released by Comex shortly:

Spirit is an untethered jailbreak.

Spirit works on all devices. (However, the redsn0w and PwnageTool flows will continue to work on those devices they’ve always worked on)

Spirit does not include a carrier unlock.

Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated

It will not be Mobile Safari based like the iPhone firmware 1.x version.

iPhone Dev Team explains:

Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners. As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they’re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day.

The Spirit jailbreak is most useful for newer devices: iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPads. Unfortunately those devices are the same ones that Apple can prevent you from downgrading unless you’ve got a backup of your personalized SHSH blobs. Unless you’ve backed up your SHSH blobs for vulnerable firmware versions, you’ll lose the ability to use the current Spirit jailbreak if you accidentally upgrade.

They have advised users to take a local backup of the SHSH blobs using Firmware Umbrella (download link) or follow these instructions to go through Saurik’s server as soon as possible.

Please note that Comex has hinted that he might not release the Spirit jailbreak on Friday as he had announced earlier due to the launch of iPad 3G. But he has promised to release it in a few days.

We will update you when the software has been released. Stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Apple News | iPhone Dev-Team on the Impending Spirit Jailbreak

At some point after (don’t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers’ hands, the first “userland” jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex. It’s called “Spirit” and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad’s release on April 3.

Please take the steps now to backup your SHSH blobs. Use either Firmware Umbrella to create a local copy, or go through saurik’s server. If you are getting an iPad 3G, it’s safest to backup your blobs using Firmware Umbrella, in case saurik’s server gets bogged down with requests.

Other things about Spirit that are useful to know:

Spirit is an untethered jailbreak.
Spirit works on all devices. (However, the redsn0w and PwnageTool flows will continue to work on those devices they’ve always worked on)
Spirit does not include a carrier unlock. (Please don’t bug @comex about that)
Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated
Please make sure you have your SHSH blobs backed up! While @comex has indicated he’s not going to release the very minute the iPad 3G is out, there’s no telling what Apple might do anyway.

chpwn: comex is very optimistic.

chpwn: but who knows :p

*Update 2: iPhone Dev-Team posts update on situation.

'Spirit' Jailbreak For iPhone OS 3.1.3 And iPhone OS 3.2 Might Be Released Tomorrow

'Spirit' Jailbreak For iPhone OS 3.1.3 And iPhone OS 3.2 Might Be Released Tomorrow

The Spirit jailbreaking tool for iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod Touch and iPhone OS 3.2 for iPad is coming soon and might be released as early as tomorrow (April 30).

Comex, the developer of the popular untethered jailbreaking software solution has announced that the much awaited tool shall be released on Friday. The announcement comes courtesy a Twitter conversation between Comex and an iPhone user.

While responding to queries regarding the release date for 'Spirit' jailbreak on Twitter, Comex said:
wahoofan5: @comex so when’s it coming out? At least give a month please
about 4 hours ago via Twitterrific in reply to comex
comex: @wahoofan5 Friday.
about 1 hour ago via web in reply to wahoofan5
There are however a few caveats to be noted. Firstly, Spirit shall not be offering a userland jailbreaking solution. In other words, the jailbreaking software will not be browser-based as previously thought. Secondly, this shall be a jailbreak-only software and will not help in unlocking your iPhone. Based on reports it appears that an unlocking solution for the latest baseband shall not be made available until the release of iPhone OS 4.0 in June.

The 'Spirit' jailbreak will be able to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPad OS 3.2 on all generations of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Here is a demo of the untethered jailbroken iPod Touch in action.

We will update you when the software has been released. Stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Apple News | iPhone 4G to Hit Stores During WWDC?

The next generation iPhone may be available for purchase during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) instead of several weeks after, according to Mashable sources.

They report that the date could be June 7th; which is likely the date of the WWDC keynote.

Over the last two years, Apple has revealed both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS at WWDC. However, the release of the actual iPhone hardware has traditionally come a few weeks after the announcement. Our sources say that Apple may break that tradition this year by shortening the timetable. An immediate release would also break another tradition: Apple fans camping out in front of Apple stores just so they can get their hands on the company’s newest product.

Its been rumored that Apple is trying to push up the timetable due to the leak of an iPhone 4G prototype which might cannibalize sales in May and June. The loss of sales seems a bit unlikely. Those who follow tech blogs and learned about the leak also know that Apple has released a new hardware revision of the device each June/July since its inception.

Mashable notes that even if Apple wants to launch the new iPhone on the same day as the keynote it may not happen due to hardware issues, software bugs, and supply chain scarcity.

Apple News | T-Mobile Drops Overage Charges On Its 5GB Data Plan

T-Mobile says it will drop overage charges on its 5 GB monthly webConnect mobile data plan and instead throttle users' speeds if they exceed that limit, according to a FierceWireless report. They are also cutting overage charges in half for the 200 MB monthly plan.

Previously, the nation's No. 4 carrier charged $0.20 per MB of data that users went over their 5 GB limit; now users will just have their data speeds slowed--but T-Mobile did not say by how much. T-Mobile said that only a "very small" number of users go over 5 GB per month when the plan is used in conjunction with an existing home broadband service. T-Mobile also cut the overage on its 200 MB monthly plan from $0.20 to $0.10 per MB. The carrier first introduced the data plans in March.

On promotion, the 5 GB plan now costs $40 per month and the 200 MB plan now costs $20 per month for existing subscribers.

Apple News | Warning: Do Not Update to iTunes 9.1.1 If You Want UL Jailbreak

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team is warning users who are hoping to use a userland jailbreak for the iPad, iPhone, or iPod to hold off on updating to iTunes 9.1.1.

Today's 9.1.1 iTunes is safe for PwnageTool&redsn0w. But those hoping to use userland JBs (like Spirit) should hold off.

In general, those using *any* userland JB should avoid iTunes updates, since iTunes can detect & remove it.

It is widely expected that the "Spirit" userland jailbreak by comex will be the first jailbreak to be released for the iPad. Spirit also provides an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch.

Warning: New Malware Targeting iTunes, iPad Users

Prominent security software company BitDefender has revealed details about a new malware in the wild that has been targeting iPad users.

According to a recent report, the malware has been spreading through unsolicited emails from scammers who trick iPad users into installing a malicious code that could potentially steal confidential information.

BitDefender has noted that the email aimed at Windows users who bought an iPad requests them to download the latest version of iTunes in order to keep iPads updated “for best performance, newer features and security”. The message is learnt to link to a download page that mimics Apple's official iTunes page. Visitors to the site are asked to download a file named "itunessetup.exe".

BitDefender indicates that this executable file installs a Trojan horse named Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY that creates a surreptious back-door entry for hackers to get access to private information like activation keys for software programs and passwords of POP3 mail accounts and applications like ICQ, Messenger that are installed on the system.

According to Catalin Cosoi, senior antivirus and malware researcher for BitDefender, the malware is programmed to specifically target Windows users. He says:

“The trick is pretty simple. When you have the iPad, you do expect to receive messages, maybe not e-mail, but messages of some sort [from Apple] that ‘We have finished an update, you have to get this update. They’re clever to do it this way. If they were able to target Mac customers, it would have spread like wildfire, but because most antivirus companies detect this [Trojan], it’s aimed at Windows users who have bought an iPad and who also don’t run a security product.”
The launch of Apple's new tablet device has been extremely successful with conservative estimates pointing to sale numbers of over 600,000 units so far. BitDefender has proposed generic safety rules as a way to combat the malware.

Do not download or save files from sources you don't know; use only the producer’s official website (www.apple.com) in order to download software for your iPad
Install and activate a reliable antimalware, firewall solution and spam filter
Update your anti-malware, firewall and spam filter as frequently as possible, with the latest virus virus definitions and suspicious application/file signatures
Run a complete anti-malware scan before opening or copying any file to your system, even if the file comes from a trusted source
Scan your system frequently
BitDefender had recently warned of a new malware in the wild that has been targeting users looking to unlock their iPhones.

So please be careful.

iPhone OS 4.0 Reveals More Evidence Of Video Chat Feature With Game Centre Integration

We have already seen enough evidence in iPhone OS 4.0 that has hinted at the possibility of video chat features in the next generation iPhone.

In fact, Gizmodo’s story has probably confirmed that Apple’s new iPhone will get a front facing camera.

MacRumors has discovered more evidence of the video chat feature in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 2, which was released last week.

The following text string was found in the latest beta version, which indicates that iPhones will have to be registered for video conferencing.

ACCOUNT_NOT_REGISTERED_MESSAGE = "This device has not been registered for video conferencing.";

iPhone OS 4.0 beta also contains error messages for lost calls, disconnected calls and networking issues.

IMAVCHAT_COULD_NOT_CONNECT_NO_REMOTE_WIFI = "The video call could not connect because a remote Wi-Fi connection could not be established.";

IMAVCHAT_DISCONNECTED_NO_LOCAL_WIFI = "The video call disconnected because the local Wi-Fi connection was lost.";

However, MacRumors points out that most of the error messages are for Wi-Fi connectivity related issues but there are no error messages for 3G connectivity related issues, which indicates that the video conferencing feature might work only over Wi-Fi initially and not over 3G.

MacRumors has also found code references that indicate that Apple will be integrating the video conferencing feature with Game Centre, its social gaming network, which was one of the major features out of the 100 new features previewed during the iPhone OS 4.0 special event.

IMAVCHAT_ERROR_NO_SUCH_PLAYER_ID = "No Such Player ID";
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_NO_SUCH_ACHIEVEMENT = "No Such Achievement";
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_UNRECOGNIZED_GAME_DESCRIPTION_HEADERS = "Unrecognised Game Descriptor Headers";
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_NO_SUCH_GAME = "No Such Game";

The ability to video chat with fellow gamers on the social gaming network could be one of the killer features of Game Centre that will be available later this year.

Interesting stuff! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Apple News | Facebook Begins Transcoding Video to MP4, Bringing iPad Support

Facebook has begun transcoding uploaded videos to MP4 bringing video playback support for the iPad via its built in player.

According to ReadWriteWeb, this feature is still begin rolled out,

We went to one user's News Feed (belonging to our own Marshall Kirkpatrick, in fact) and discovered he had uploaded two video files last night using iCamcorder. On the iPad, the earlier video played, launching as a full-screen MP4. The other, when clicked, informed us that we needed Flash in order to view it.

Earlier reports believed that Facebook had launched an HTML5 player; however, that was not the case.

Apple News | That Lost 4G Phone [Dilbert]

Scott Adams has posted two Dilbert comics about the lost iPhone 4G prototype which he has decided not to run. The reason being is that they wouldn't run in their normal position until June 18th 'which seemed too far in the future'.

Take a moment to marvel at the fact that I didn't need to add anything to the story as it has been told in the media. All it really needed was Wally. I don't think any of us will ever know what really happened. I based the comic on the media's speculation of events. Remember that I'm in the parody business and not the truth business.

You can find the comics below...

Apple News | MacBook Pro Core i7 Runs Hot, 100 Degrees Celsius Hot!

Testing of the new MacBook Pro shows that its Core i7 CPU is hitting temperatures over 100 Degrees Celsius, according to PCAuthority.

The site noticed some poor results when benchmarking the notebook and identified the issue as heat build up. After successfully running the tests with the notebook on its side they determined it was the aluminium shell of the Macbook to blame.

--
To be sure of our results we left the Macbook Pro overnight to cool off. Upon coming back into the office we repeated our tests, first in Windows and then in OS X. By the time the second run of the Cinebench test finished in Windows, the CPU Diode was reporting a temperature of 101 degrees Celsius.

A similar situation occurred in OS X. We've included the graph showing the heat output from the MacBook Pro's sensors below. In it the CPU peaks at 101 degrees, but worryingly the heat buildup in the CPU doesn't register on the enclosure sensors. This is despite the chassis getting hot to the touch, and the heat buildup being registered on all the hardware-based sensors in the Macbook Pro.
--

PCAuthority also noted that real world benchmarks were pushing CPU temps over 90 degrees.

It is important to note that while the processor was stressed to maximum levels it still did not hit temperatures that exceed Intel's thermal spec for the MacBook Pro's Intel Core i7 Mobile Processor (I7-620M) of 105° C.

Apple News | Geohot's New Jailbreak to be Called Limera1n?

Domain registration records reveal that Geohot has registered the limera1n domain, according to Redmond Pie.

The domain whois record for both blackra1n and limera1n shares same record and confirms that it has been registered by geohot on March 27. Whois record also reveals that it was last updated on April 13, almost effectively the same date when geohot successfully jailbroke iPhone OS 4 which makes it even more authentic. Though there is no confirmation about this by geohot himself.

If you head over to the site you will see a raindrop that looks just like the icon for blackra1n but with a lime color to it.

It's unclear if geohot plans to use the limera1n name for the untethered 3.x jailbreaks or for OS 4.0.
