OmniVision today introduced the OV2720, the world's first 1/6-inch, native 1080p/30 high-definition (HD) CMOS image sensor designed for notebook, netbook, webcam and video conferencing applications. Based on OmniVision's 1.4 micron OmniBSI™ backside illumination technology, the new 1080p sensor delivers video conference quality HD video recording in a small enough form factor to meet the module size and height requirements of today's thin notebook designs. The OV2720 is currently sampling with multiple tier-one customers and is slated to go into mass production in June 2010.
"Increased broadband capability, inexpensive high-quality image sensors and the increasing availability of high-quality external and embedded PC web cameras will drive both consumer and business video conferencing," said Brian O'Rourke, principal analyst at In-Stat. "In 2010, we expect over 70 percent of mobile PCs to ship with embedded cameras, and the availability of sensors such as OmniVision's OV2720 will make high definition video conferencing more popular in the notebook and netbook PC segments."
"Consumer demand for HD video has never been greater. Display formats are moving to a 16 by 9 aspect ratio, TV broadcast is embracing HD, and social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook are supporting HD," said Nick Nam, product marketing manager at OmniVision. "With the OV2720, OmniVision continues to lead the industry in bringing to market innovative, high performance HD solutions, addressing the growing demand for the HD video-enabled devices of the YouTube generation. With the broadest portfolio of HD video products in the industry, we enable our customers to find the right solution for their price, performance and size requirements."
The OV2720 is the first 1/6-inch sensor to offer native 1080p HD resolution. Native HD enables full field of view video with optimized image quality, sensitivity, color reproduction and clarity because no scaling or cropping is required to achieve HD resolution. The 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel achieves best-in-class low light sensitivity of 680-mV/lux-sec, while enabling extremely thin modules with a z-height of 3.5 mm. Moreover, the OV2720 can use binning to further increase its low-light performance to double that of similar-sized VGA sensors. The OV2720's outstanding low-light performance and slim form factor combine to make it an ideal choice for tier-one notebook manufacturers.
The OV2720 CMOS image sensor supports multiple platform architectures and controllers with both parallel and MIPI interfaces. It allows system designers to leverage the same opto-electrical design across various products and multiple market segments to reduce product development time. Exposure control, white balance and defective pixel canceling are programmable through the serial camera control bus interface. In addition, the OV2720 uses proprietary sensor technology to improve image quality. By reducing or eliminating common lighting or electrical sources of image contamination, such as fixed pattern noise and smearing, the sensor can generate a clean, fully stable color image.

Apple News | iPad Controlled Video Blimp
reakfastNewYork created a blimp that is controlled by an iPad's accelerometer and outfitted it with a video camera.
We created a modified BlimpDuino controlled by an iPad's accelerometer for guests to have a play with. Added bonuses: you get a cockpit view on the iPad, so you can see whatever the blimp sees, and it just so happens that anyone that looks up at the blimp has their face turned into one of the exhibited Munny character's faces.

Apple News | Foxconn to Ship 24 Million iPhone 4Gs in 2010
Starting in June, Foxconn will ship 24 million units of the Apple iPhone 4G which features an improved display, more memory, and a larger battery, according to Digitimes.
Foxconn will ship 4.5 million units in the first half and 19.5 million units for the rest of 2010. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 4G on June 7, 2010 during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. The new device will adopt IPS (in-plane switching) panels with FFS (fringe-field switching) technology and a 960×640 resolution, Kuo said, noting that LG Display and Prime View International are the panel suppliers.
Digitimes also claims the iPhone 4G will run on the Arm Cortex A8 processor and have a 512MB memory module from Samsung which is double that of the iPhone 4GS.
The iPhone 4G's display panel is said to be 33% thinner to allow for a larger battery module supplied by Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology.

Apple News | Steam for Mac vs. Steam for Windows: Benchmarks
The first comparison benchmarks of Steam for Mac vs. Steam for Windows has been posted by TomsHardware.
The site used a late-2009 MacBook Pro and a custom-built hackintosh for testing.
We can see immediately that Portal for Mac is nowhere near as capable as its Windows counterpart. However, there are several interesting points to take away from this. Portal for Mac, in its current form, is at least able to deliver playable frame rates, even on a lower-end Mac like last year's MacBook Pro. Admittedly, the biggest bottleneck here is the GPU.
On the hackintosh side, it looks like the Mac drivers play a key role. "Until Apple comes out with higher-performance drivers, we'll continue to see a significant delta between the two platforms." TomsHardware also notes that OpenGL is better suited to productivity than gaming.

Apple News | Google, Intel, Sony to Announced 'Smart TV' This Week
Google, Intel, and Sony are expected to announce a significant breakthrough in consumer electronics with the launch of a 'Smart TV' platform this week, according to the Financial Times.
The announcement is expected to take place during Google's annual developer conference in San Francisco. The new platform will see Intel's Atom microprocessor and Google's Android operating system join to bring web services to Sony's televisions.
“The revolution we’re about to go through is the biggest single change in television since it went colour,” Paul Otellini, Intel chief executive, told analysts last week.
“If you had asked me a year ago, I would have said no way Intel and Google could make an impression,” said Kurt Scherf, principal analyst at research firm Parks Associates. “But Intel looks to have gained some traction and the operating system space is so wide open that it’s a case of why not Google at this point.”
“We’re seeing the beginning of explosive growth,” Eric Kim, head of Intel’s Digital Home group, told analysts. “Right now, we’re gearing up for a massive retail launch of [connected devices] this year.”
Google is expected to ask its Android developer community to begin creating applications for TVs this week.

Apple News | iPad 3G Hacked to Send SMS Messages
MuscleNerd has hacked his iPad 3G to provide native (but primitive) SMS.
This was sent using a raw AT+CMGS command sent to the iPad baseband. That's because so far, MobileSMS.app from the iPhone doesn't run properly on the iPad.
This iPad is using a T-Mobile SIM cut down into microSIM size. The AT&T plan attached to the SIM that came with the iPad isn't allowing SMS messages.

iPhone Dev Team Provides More Details About 'Spirit' Jailbreak; Might Not Be Released Today
iPhone Dev Team Provides More Details About 'Spirit' Jailbreak; Might Not Be Released Today
iPhone Dev Team has published a post providing more details about the ‘Spirit’ jailbreak that Comex is planning to release shortly that can jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 for all iPhone and iPod Touches and iPhone OS 3.2 for iPad.
The ‘Spirit’ jailbreak is the first userland jailbreak since iPhone firmware 1.x, which allowed users to jailbreak their iPhone using Mobile Safari.
Here are some useful details about the ‘Spirit’ jailbreak that will be released by Comex shortly:
Spirit is an untethered jailbreak.
Spirit works on all devices. (However, the redsn0w and PwnageTool flows will continue to work on those devices they’ve always worked on)
Spirit does not include a carrier unlock.
Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated
It will not be Mobile Safari based like the iPhone firmware 1.x version.
iPhone Dev Team explains:
Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners. As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they’re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. Apple released new firmware to close that hole within a day.
The Spirit jailbreak is most useful for newer devices: iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPads. Unfortunately those devices are the same ones that Apple can prevent you from downgrading unless you’ve got a backup of your personalized SHSH blobs. Unless you’ve backed up your SHSH blobs for vulnerable firmware versions, you’ll lose the ability to use the current Spirit jailbreak if you accidentally upgrade.
They have advised users to take a local backup of the SHSH blobs using Firmware Umbrella (download link) or follow these instructions to go through Saurik’s server as soon as possible.
Please note that Comex has hinted that he might not release the Spirit jailbreak on Friday as he had announced earlier due to the launch of iPad 3G. But he has promised to release it in a few days.
We will update you when the software has been released. Stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Apple News | iPhone Dev-Team on the Impending Spirit Jailbreak
At some point after (don’t ask when!) the iPad 3G is actually in customers’ hands, the first “userland” jailbreak since firmware 1.x will be released by @comex. It’s called “Spirit” and was first demonstrated working on an iPad by @MuscleNerd within 24 hours of the iPad’s release on April 3.
Userland jailbreaks are more troublesome for Apple since they expose security weaknesses that exist even for non-jailbroken owners. As such, Apple is likely to close them soon after they’re made public. One recent example of this is the SMS vulnerability exposed at Blackhat last summer. Please take the steps now to backup your SHSH blobs. Use either Firmware Umbrella to create a local copy, or go through saurik’s server. If you are getting an iPad 3G, it’s safest to backup your blobs using Firmware Umbrella, in case saurik’s server gets bogged down with requests.

Please make sure you have your SHSH blobs backed up! While @comex has indicated he’s not going to release the very minute the iPad 3G is out, there’s no telling what Apple might do anyway.

'Spirit' Jailbreak For iPhone OS 3.1.3 And iPhone OS 3.2 Might Be Released Tomorrow
The Spirit jailbreaking tool for iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod Touch and iPhone OS 3.2 for iPad is coming soon and might be released as early as tomorrow (April 30).
Comex, the developer of the popular untethered jailbreaking software solution has announced that the much awaited tool shall be released on Friday. The announcement comes courtesy a Twitter conversation between Comex and an iPhone user.
While responding to queries regarding the release date for 'Spirit' jailbreak on Twitter, Comex said:

There are however a few caveats to be noted. Firstly, Spirit shall not be offering a userland jailbreaking solution. In other words, the jailbreaking software will not be browser-based as previously thought. Secondly, this shall be a jailbreak-only software and will not help in unlocking your iPhone. Based on reports it appears that an unlocking solution for the latest baseband shall not be made available until the release of iPhone OS 4.0 in June.
The 'Spirit' jailbreak will be able to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPad OS 3.2 on all generations of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Here is a demo of the untethered jailbroken iPod Touch in action.
We will update you when the software has been released. Stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Apple News | iPhone 4G to Hit Stores During WWDC?
The next generation iPhone may be available for purchase during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) instead of several weeks after, according to Mashable sources.
They report that the date could be June 7th; which is likely the date of the WWDC keynote.
Over the last two years, Apple has revealed both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS at WWDC. However, the release of the actual iPhone hardware has traditionally come a few weeks after the announcement. Our sources say that Apple may break that tradition this year by shortening the timetable. An immediate release would also break another tradition: Apple fans camping out in front of Apple stores just so they can get their hands on the company’s newest product.
Its been rumored that Apple is trying to push up the timetable due to the leak of an iPhone 4G prototype which might cannibalize sales in May and June. The loss of sales seems a bit unlikely. Those who follow tech blogs and learned about the leak also know that Apple has released a new hardware revision of the device each June/July since its inception.
Mashable notes that even if Apple wants to launch the new iPhone on the same day as the keynote it may not happen due to hardware issues, software bugs, and supply chain scarcity.

Apple News | T-Mobile Drops Overage Charges On Its 5GB Data Plan
T-Mobile says it will drop overage charges on its 5 GB monthly webConnect mobile data plan and instead throttle users' speeds if they exceed that limit, according to a FierceWireless report. They are also cutting overage charges in half for the 200 MB monthly plan.
Previously, the nation's No. 4 carrier charged $0.20 per MB of data that users went over their 5 GB limit; now users will just have their data speeds slowed--but T-Mobile did not say by how much. T-Mobile said that only a "very small" number of users go over 5 GB per month when the plan is used in conjunction with an existing home broadband service. T-Mobile also cut the overage on its 200 MB monthly plan from $0.20 to $0.10 per MB. The carrier first introduced the data plans in March.
On promotion, the 5 GB plan now costs $40 per month and the 200 MB plan now costs $20 per month for existing subscribers.

Apple News | Warning: Do Not Update to iTunes 9.1.1 If You Want UL Jailbreak
MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team is warning users who are hoping to use a userland jailbreak for the iPad, iPhone, or iPod to hold off on updating to iTunes 9.1.1.
Today's 9.1.1 iTunes is safe for PwnageTool&redsn0w. But those hoping to use userland JBs (like Spirit) should hold off.
In general, those using *any* userland JB should avoid iTunes updates, since iTunes can detect & remove it.
It is widely expected that the "Spirit" userland jailbreak by comex will be the first jailbreak to be released for the iPad. Spirit also provides an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch.

Warning: New Malware Targeting iTunes, iPad Users
Prominent security software company BitDefender has revealed details about a new malware in the wild that has been targeting iPad users.
According to a recent report, the malware has been spreading through unsolicited emails from scammers who trick iPad users into installing a malicious code that could potentially steal confidential information.
BitDefender has noted that the email aimed at Windows users who bought an iPad requests them to download the latest version of iTunes in order to keep iPads updated “for best performance, newer features and security”. The message is learnt to link to a download page that mimics Apple's official iTunes page. Visitors to the site are asked to download a file named "itunessetup.exe".
BitDefender indicates that this executable file installs a Trojan horse named Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY that creates a surreptious back-door entry for hackers to get access to private information like activation keys for software programs and passwords of POP3 mail accounts and applications like ICQ, Messenger that are installed on the system.
According to Catalin Cosoi, senior antivirus and malware researcher for BitDefender, the malware is programmed to specifically target Windows users. He says:
“The trick is pretty simple. When you have the iPad, you do expect to receive messages, maybe not e-mail, but messages of some sort [from Apple] that ‘We have finished an update, you have to get this update. They’re clever to do it this way. If they were able to target Mac customers, it would have spread like wildfire, but because most antivirus companies detect this [Trojan], it’s aimed at Windows users who have bought an iPad and who also don’t run a security product.”
The launch of Apple's new tablet device has been extremely successful with conservative estimates pointing to sale numbers of over 600,000 units so far. BitDefender has proposed generic safety rules as a way to combat the malware.
Do not download or save files from sources you don't know; use only the producer’s official website (www.apple.com) in order to download software for your iPad
Install and activate a reliable antimalware, firewall solution and spam filter
Update your anti-malware, firewall and spam filter as frequently as possible, with the latest virus virus definitions and suspicious application/file signatures
Run a complete anti-malware scan before opening or copying any file to your system, even if the file comes from a trusted source
Scan your system frequently
BitDefender had recently warned of a new malware in the wild that has been targeting users looking to unlock their iPhones.
So please be careful.

iPhone OS 4.0 Reveals More Evidence Of Video Chat Feature With Game Centre Integration
We have already seen enough evidence in iPhone OS 4.0 that has hinted at the possibility of video chat features in the next generation iPhone.
In fact, Gizmodo’s story has probably confirmed that Apple’s new iPhone will get a front facing camera.
MacRumors has discovered more evidence of the video chat feature in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 2, which was released last week.
The following text string was found in the latest beta version, which indicates that iPhones will have to be registered for video conferencing.
ACCOUNT_NOT_REGISTERED_MESSAGE = "This device has not been registered for video conferencing.";
iPhone OS 4.0 beta also contains error messages for lost calls, disconnected calls and networking issues.
IMAVCHAT_COULD_NOT_CONNECT_NO_REMOTE_WIFI = "The video call could not connect because a remote Wi-Fi connection could not be established.";
IMAVCHAT_DISCONNECTED_NO_LOCAL_WIFI = "The video call disconnected because the local Wi-Fi connection was lost.";
However, MacRumors points out that most of the error messages are for Wi-Fi connectivity related issues but there are no error messages for 3G connectivity related issues, which indicates that the video conferencing feature might work only over Wi-Fi initially and not over 3G.
MacRumors has also found code references that indicate that Apple will be integrating the video conferencing feature with Game Centre, its social gaming network, which was one of the major features out of the 100 new features previewed during the iPhone OS 4.0 special event.
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_NO_SUCH_PLAYER_ID = "No Such Player ID";
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_NO_SUCH_ACHIEVEMENT = "No Such Achievement";
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_UNRECOGNIZED_GAME_DESCRIPTION_HEADERS = "Unrecognised Game Descriptor Headers";
IMAVCHAT_ERROR_NO_SUCH_GAME = "No Such Game";
The ability to video chat with fellow gamers on the social gaming network could be one of the killer features of Game Centre that will be available later this year.
Interesting stuff! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Apple News | New Opera Browser for Mac is 10x Faster
The new Opera browser for Mac is now more than ten times faster, according to speed comparisons between Opera 10.52 and Opera 10.10.
The new version boasts an improved user interface, Cocoa integration, multi-touch trackpad gestures and Growl support. This, combined with the unprecedented speed from the new JavaScript engine, Carakan, and the new graphic library, Vega, provides a faster and smoother browsing experience. The new Opera also features the latest in Web standards, including leading SVG support and HTML 5 video.
Main reasons to try Opera for Mac:
● Top speed - Take advantage of the world's fastest browser optimized for Mac, now more than ten times faster than the previous version of Opera for Mac.
● Mac-ified UI – Opera’s new user interface for Mac is now more responsive, with a unified toolbar and design overhaul.
● Finger navigation – Multi-touch trackpad gestures make browsing much more efficient. Pinch to zoom or use two fingers to scroll and three fingers to navigate back and forth in your browser history, all from your trackpad.

Apple News | Facebook Begins Transcoding Video to MP4, Bringing iPad Support
Facebook has begun transcoding uploaded videos to MP4 bringing video playback support for the iPad via its built in player.
According to ReadWriteWeb, this feature is still begin rolled out,
We went to one user's News Feed (belonging to our own Marshall Kirkpatrick, in fact) and discovered he had uploaded two video files last night using iCamcorder. On the iPad, the earlier video played, launching as a full-screen MP4. The other, when clicked, informed us that we needed Flash in order to view it.
Earlier reports believed that Facebook had launched an HTML5 player; however, that was not the case.

Apple News | That Lost 4G Phone [Dilbert]
Scott Adams has posted two Dilbert comics about the lost iPhone 4G prototype which he has decided not to run. The reason being is that they wouldn't run in their normal position until June 18th 'which seemed too far in the future'.
Take a moment to marvel at the fact that I didn't need to add anything to the story as it has been told in the media. All it really needed was Wally. I don't think any of us will ever know what really happened. I based the comic on the media's speculation of events. Remember that I'm in the parody business and not the truth business.
You can find the comics below...

Apple News | MacBook Pro Core i7 Runs Hot, 100 Degrees Celsius Hot!
Testing of the new MacBook Pro shows that its Core i7 CPU is hitting temperatures over 100 Degrees Celsius, according to PCAuthority.
The site noticed some poor results when benchmarking the notebook and identified the issue as heat build up. After successfully running the tests with the notebook on its side they determined it was the aluminium shell of the Macbook to blame.
--
To be sure of our results we left the Macbook Pro overnight to cool off. Upon coming back into the office we repeated our tests, first in Windows and then in OS X. By the time the second run of the Cinebench test finished in Windows, the CPU Diode was reporting a temperature of 101 degrees Celsius.
A similar situation occurred in OS X. We've included the graph showing the heat output from the MacBook Pro's sensors below. In it the CPU peaks at 101 degrees, but worryingly the heat buildup in the CPU doesn't register on the enclosure sensors. This is despite the chassis getting hot to the touch, and the heat buildup being registered on all the hardware-based sensors in the Macbook Pro.
--
PCAuthority also noted that real world benchmarks were pushing CPU temps over 90 degrees.
It is important to note that while the processor was stressed to maximum levels it still did not hit temperatures that exceed Intel's thermal spec for the MacBook Pro's Intel Core i7 Mobile Processor (I7-620M) of 105° C.

It is important to note that while the processor was stressed to maximum levels it still did not hit temperatures that exceed Intel's thermal spec for the MacBook Pro's Intel Core i7 Mobile Processor (I7-620M) of 105° C.

Apple News | Geohot's New Jailbreak to be Called Limera1n?
Domain registration records reveal that Geohot has registered the limera1n domain, according to Redmond Pie.
The domain whois record for both blackra1n and limera1n shares same record and confirms that it has been registered by geohot on March 27. Whois record also reveals that it was last updated on April 13, almost effectively the same date when geohot successfully jailbroke iPhone OS 4 which makes it even more authentic. Though there is no confirmation about this by geohot himself.
If you head over to the site you will see a raindrop that looks just like the icon for blackra1n but with a lime color to it.
It's unclear if geohot plans to use the limera1n name for the untethered 3.x jailbreaks or for OS 4.0.

Apple News | WARNING: Thunderst0rm and TurboSn0w2 Jailbreaks Are Fake!
TurboSn0w2 and the new Thunderst0rm jailbreaks for iPhone OS 3.1.3 are FAKE; DO NOT INSTALL.
BigBoss recently posted the following warning:
Thunderst0rm is “supposed” to be an untethered jailbreak for 3.1.3. It was released today and is available for download. Thunderst0rm is fake. Do not download or run it. We aren’t sure what all it does, but it does not jailbreak your device. Furthermore, it may install some spyware or something. It should be avoided. Rumors say it deletes several files from iTunes meaning you would possibly have to reinstall iTunes after running it.
Another one called TurboSn0w2 is also fake.

Apple News | Steve Jobs Says: 'Nope' to Approved Only Apps for Mac OS 10.7
Steve Jobs was recently asked about the rumor of a Mac App Store for OS X 10.7.
-----
Hey Steve,
There's a rumor saying there will be a Mac App Store and no software without authorization from Apple will run on Mac OS X. Is that true?
-----
Nope.
-----
Unfortunately, Job's short reply doesn't fully address the rumors. Apple could still offer authorized applications through a Mac App Store without blocking applications that are distributed directly.

Apple News | Two iPod Touch Prototypes (With Cameras) For Sale on eBay
Someone has posted two iPod touch prototypes with cameras for sale on eBay, according to 9to5Mac.
Someone has put up two semi-working iPod touches WITH cameras and a development version of the iPod OS on Ebay. They are marked with 'DVT-1' and 'DVT-2', 'Apple Development Team' and one is running some sort of 'switchboard' OS window.
It was widely expected that the iPod touch 3G would have a camera; however, when released it did not. It was later confirmed that the leaked pictures showing a camera were indeed authentic.
*Update: the eBay auction has been pulled.

Apple News | Police Open Investigation Into Lost/Stolen iPhone 4G Prototype
Silicon Valley police have opened an investigation into how Gizmodo came into possession of the iPhone 4G prototype, a law enforcement official told CNET on Friday.
Apple has spoken to local police about the incident and the investigation is believed to be headed by a computer crime task force led by the Santa Clara County district attorney's office, the source said.
The purpose of an investigation is to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to file criminal charges.
Gizmodo, part of Gawker Media, paid $5,000 for what they believed to be an Apple iPhone 4G prototype. The iPhone was reportedly lost by an Apple employee then found by someone who contacted the site.
There has been much discussion online as to whether the finder/seller or Gizmodo violated any laws by taking possession of the device. CNET has not been able to confirm whether the investigation is targeting Gizmodo.com, the seller, or both.
The computer crime task force is called REACT, which stands for Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, and was established in 1997 with a goal of working closely with Bay Area technology companies.

Apple News | Mac OS X 10.7 Will Only Allow Apple Approved Apps?
A new report suggests that Apple is planning to lock down Mac OS X 10.7 in a similar manner to the iPhone, iPod, and iPad.
According to Rixstep, Developers planning on marketing software for 10.7 will submit their products to the App Store as iPhone and now iPad developers have already done. 10.7 will have kernel support for ('insistence on') binaries signed with Apple's root certificate. No software will be able to run on Mac OS X 10.7 without being approved and signed by Apple, Inc.
Apple will supposedly begin signing up independent software vendors (ISVs) for the 10.7 developer program by early autumn 2010. Rixstep expects that there will be efforts to jailbreak OS X 10.7 just as there have been with the iPhone.
No information is provided about the source of this speculation...

Apple News | Google Says It Plans to Bring Its Free Navigation App to the iPhone
Google confirmed at a London press conference that it plans to bring its free turn-by-turn navigation app to other smartphone platforms, including the iPhone, according to a MacUser report.
The company wouldn't say when it expected the application to be available for the iPhone.
Google Maps Navigation requires an active data connection when planning routes, though not while traveling.
“Google Maps pre-caches the entire route,” said Mobile Maps product manager, Steve Lee. “It needs a data connection when you ask for navigation. But while driving to your destination, if you intermittently lose the connection, it will still carry on. As long as you stay on the route.”

Apple News | Apple is Imposing a Lifetime Limit on iPad Purchases
I had planned on reviewing the iPad in my next post, but instead I’ll dedicate this entry to my photo below and an incident that happened today. Review of the iPad coming soon.
As was correctly guessed, those iPads in the photo are not for me. When Apple delayed the international iPad launch by a month, early adopters worldwide started to panic. Since my nearby Apple store initially had plenty of stock, I offered to purchase and ship iPads internationally for members of the NeoGAF gaming forum. I was doing this as a favor, unlike hoarders who were unloading iPads on eBay to cash in on the $150+ markup. Instead, my asking prices were very reasonable, just enough to cover all the tax, international express shipping, and Paypal fees with a little left over for unexpected costs.
So as the pick-up requests came in, I went on multiple visits to the Apple store, buying no more than 2 per day since I had heard there was a limit per person. I found this whole situation pretty funny considering I had never bought an Apple product prior to this madness (the iPod Touch I use at work was given to me by my medical school). But the store recently went completely out of stock. I had one last order to fulfill so an employee helped me place a reservation. A few days passed and yesterday I was sent an email notifying that my reserved iPad had come in. The story begins here…
I walk into the store today and ask somebody where I can pick up my iPad reservation. He notes my name and says he’ll be back, going behind closed doors to the stockroom.
I take advantage of this opportunity to place another iPad reservation using a store PowerBook. There are a couple more NeoGAF people considering a purchase, but they haven’t paid me yet. Oh well, by the time this reservation comes in, one of them should have made up his mind and sent payment.
But drats, reservations are limited to one per iTunes account. Luckily I have a second account so I used that to place the reservation. No sweat.
The employee emerges a few minutes later with the iPad and I hand over my credit card. If you’ve never been to an Apple store before, instead of checking customers out at a register, the employees use hand-held credit card terminals to ring up purchases. Adds to the hip factor, I suppose.
But instead of using his handheld device, he walks to the back of the store where the “Genius Bar” is. Naught a word spoken. There are registers here but this area is used mainly for technical support. I follow the guy there. He still hasn’t said anything to me. He gives my credit card to one of the staff there and says, “I want you to help me ring up this purchase.”
Guy #2 (looking at the handheld terminal) — “Why don’t you just use that?”
Guy #1 — “I need to check the card for… uh, pre-authorization.”
Guy #2 — “Ok.”
He swipes my card and they click around for about half a minute while looking at their monitor and whispering. Meanwhile, I’m standing on the other side of the Genius Bar, only half paying attention to these two guys. Instead I was curiously watching an employee ask a girl what she loves most about Apple.
Guy #2 (murmuring) — “…yeah, the 14th.”
My attention snaps back when I catch this snippet. April 14th was my last trip to the Apple store, and I had bought 2 iPads that day. When I walked to the Genius Bar, I hadn’t suspected anything out of the ordinary. But now I suddenly realize I will not be walking out of here with an iPad today.
Guy #1 says to Guy #2 — “Hold on, I’ll be right back” and disappears to the stockroom again. Guy #2 is still clicking around, not looking at me.
Me (nonchalantly) — “Is there an issue?”
He’s still staring at his monitor and a few seconds pass before Guy #2 carefully says, “There is a limit to the number of iPads that customers can buy.”
Me (playing dumb) — “Oh, is that right? What’s the limit?”
Guy #2 — “Only 2 per customer.”
Ok, so the gig is up. I stand around waiting for a bit and was preparing to leave when Guy #1 returns.
Guy #1 — “I’m sorry sir, but you have reached your lifetime limit of iPad purchases and will not be allowed to buy any more.”
Me (anticipating that statement) — “Is the iPad limit per person? Per credit card? Per household?”
Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.”
Me — “What does that mean? Can I use a different credit card to buy it? I’m buying this for a friend.”
Guy #1 — “You are not allowed to buy this iPad.”
Me — “Uhh… is it ok if I have a family member or friend come to buy it for me? My reservation doesn’t expire until 6:00 PM.”
Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.”
Me (suddenly realizing what he’s saying)– “Wait, what? Lifetime? What does that mean?”
Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit of iPads and will not be allowed to buy any more.”
Me — “I’m banned from buying iPads? I know there’s a shortage right now, but I can’t buy any more once there’s plenty of stock?”
Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.”
I pause and look at him with incredulity undoubtedly written all over my face. Everybody tells me I have the worst poker face. Hey asshole, nice job with the passive aggressiveness, but who do you think you’re talking to? I’m from Los Angeles; nobody does passive-aggressive like we do!
Me — “Ok buddy, I’m not going to make a scene so I’m leaving. How many iPads is the limit by the way?”
Guy #1 — “That information is not available.”
Me (looking at Guy #2, who has been silent this whole time) — “He tells me that the limit is two.”
Guy #1 — “I wish I could say but I do not have that information.”
Me — “I’ve already purchased more than 2 iPads. Why didn’t anybody else stop me in the past?”
Guy #1 — “I wish I could say but I do not have that information.”
Me — “Alright, I’ve had enough. Have a good day.”
The icing on the cake? When I came home, I found an email from Apple waiting for me. It was an update about my reservation, the one I had placed today in the store using my 2nd account!
As was correctly guessed, those iPads in the photo are not for me. When Apple delayed the international iPad launch by a month, early adopters worldwide started to panic.
History Of Apple Product Leaks And Apple's Response
History Of Apple Product Leaks And Apple's Response
Apple is a company that is not just known for great products, but also for the extremely secretive nature of operations.
The company has traditionally shrouded its new products in mystery ahead of their official launch. Gizmodo's leak of the new iPhone earlier this week is one of the very few instances where intricate details about an upcoming Apple device made its way to the media even before it is officially unveiled.
Here is a look at some of the earlier instances when details about Apple's upcoming products were leaked ahead of the official launch.
2000: PowerMac, iBook and Mouse
In July 2000, a person only known by his online handle "worker bee" posted several details about an upcoming version of iBook on the AppleInsider forum. "Worker Bee" also followed this up by divulging more details about Apple's new mouse and a dual-processor PowerMac. Apple responded by filing a lawsuit even before knowing who the culprit was. "Worker Bee" was later identified as an ex-Apple employee named Juan Gutierrez. The case was settled outside the court.
At around the same time, Apple news website MacInTouch published pictures of a Cube-Shaped Mac that was apparently leaked to them by an anonymous tipster. Apple responded by issuing a "Notice of Infringement" asking for the content to be pulled down. A week later, Steve Jobs announced the cube-shaped Mac at MacWorld.
2005: iWork and Asteroid
Apple's launch of its iWork productivity suite in 2005 was preceded by accurate leaks on a Mac fans website Think Secret. The website also leaked information about the launch of a $499 Mac besides offering information on an upcoming music device codenamed Asteroid. Claiming that the company's "DNA is innovation, and the protection of our trade secrets is crucial to our success", Apple filed a lawsuit against Think Secret. After three years of legal dispute, the company reached a settlement with the owner of Think Secret, Nick Ciarelli, who agreed to shut the site down.
2007: Fat Nano
In one of the more recent instances, CrunchGear, Gizmodo and 9to5Mac published leaked pictures of an upcoming model of iPod Nano that was nicknamed "Fat Nano". Apple's legal team soon responded by issuing cease-and-desist notices to these websites. While CrunchGear and Gizmodo replaced the pictures with mock renderings, 9to5Mac pulled the entire content down.
Apple's response to product leaks in the past have shown that the company has always been concerned about the source of leaks and the media publications are spared of legal action if they comply with the company's take down request. In the latest case however, the leak appears to have happened by accident rather than any deliberate attempt by the Apple employee. Under such circumstances, we wonder if Apple's legal team would take any action against Gizmodo or the person who sold the next generation iPhone prototype to them.
What are your thoughts? Do you think its the last we've heard of this story?

Apple News | Women Found More Likely To Give Their Number to a Man With an iPhone
A new survey has found that women are more likely to give out their phone number to men who have iPhones.
CultofMac reports that a Phones4U survey of 1,500 women found that 54% of them would be more likely to give their digits and date an iPhone owner than a non-iPhone owner and 37% said that owning an iPhone makes a man seem more reliable.
The survey also found that iPhone owners were better groomed, more likely to have a good sense of humor, and better at conversation.
“There’s just something about a man who’s good with computers that makes him more trustworthy,” said Lucy, a 23-year-old primary school teacher from London, in the press release. “If he’s got the cash for an iPhone then he must be very good at his job, too.”

How Apple Conceals Prototype iPhones
There's a reason why more people haven't seen the next iPhones before Steve Jobs makes an announcement: They're in disguise.
This iPhone, which looks drastically different from the 3GS, was enclosed in a custom-molded plastic case so it could be used in public without attracting attention. In regular use, you would think that this was just a standard iPhone with the writing scratched off the back. Very clever.
The plastic case, which comes apart easily, looks just like a 3GS. When you pry the case apart, three bits--the power button, the mute switch and the volume rocker--quickly shed off. It's weird that these bits are made of plastic, when the corresponding parts on the 3GS are made of aluminum/metal.
To reassemble the case, all you have to do is make sure the little plastic bits are in the right place before popping the front back on. A very ingenious solution to protect future designs from lookeyloos. One of the best bits is that the case looks like a case FOR an older iPhone. iPhone cases are seen so often, that even if this one looks weird and doesn't match up to the 3GS body, it can be easily dismissed as just being a lousy case.
The Complete Lost iPhone Saga
All the details about the next iPhone including a dissection
How Apple lost the next iPhone
How Apple missed chances to get the device back
Conspiracy theorists: Why Apple didn't leak the iPhone to us
Why it's not about the iPhone
And finally, how Apple asked to get their phone back

Apple News | 99 Year Old Woman Finds It Easy to Use the iPad [Video]
A 99 year old Lake Oswego woman has found the joy of reading again thanks to the iPad.
Glaucoma made it difficult for Virginia Campbell to read. "I found recently that I wasn't even able to read large-print library books because there wasn't enough contrast between the print and the page," Campbell said. "I could write them all right, but I couldn't read what I wrote."
Luckily an iPad given to her by her family is making things easier. "The type jumps out at me," she said. "Now I can read again and it's just opened up the world."
Campbell's son-in-law posted a video of her using the iPad on YouTube which has since received about 38,000 views.
The iPad even inspired Campbell to write a poem:
To this technology-ninny it’s clear
In my compromised 100th year,
That to read and to write
Are again within sight
Of this Apple iPad pioneer.
"You're never too old to take advantage of something that will help you," Campbell said.

Apple News | Steve Jobs: 'Folks Who Want Porn Can Buy An Android Phone'
Steve Jobs has responded to a customer concerned about Apple's censorship by stating that 'folks who want porn can buy an Android phone'.
-----
Steve,
I was converted to Apple products with the announcement of the iPhone 3G. (My friends have been trying to convince me for years.) Since then I’ve purchased 4 iPhones, 2 computers, several routers, and miscellaneous other items. Unfortunately, I’m really starting to have a philosophical issue with your company. It appears that more and more Apple is determining for it’s consumers what content they should be able to receive. For instance, the blocking of Mark Fiore’s comic app (due to being political satire) or blocking of what Apple considers to be porn.
I’m all for keeping porn out of kids hands. Heck – I’m all for ensuring that I don’t have to see it unless I want to. But… that’s what parental controls are for. Put these types of apps into categories and allow them to be blocked by their parents should they want to.
Apple’s role isn’t moral police – Apple’s role is to design and produce really cool gadgets that do what the consumer wants them to do.
Thanks for listening
-Matthew

Fiore’s app will be in the store shortly. That was a mistake. However, we do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy and Android phone.

Verizon Launching HTC Droid Incredible On April 29 - Should Apple Be Worried?
HTC has been regularly churning out new Android smartphone models.
Just weeks after HTC EVO 4G was unveiled, the company got together with Verizon last week to unveil new HTC Droid Incredible.
The Android 2.1 based smartphone will launch on April 29 at a starting price of $199.99.
Here is a look at the technical specifications
Dimensions: 4.63" x 2.30" x 0.47"
Display: 3.7 inch screen with 480 x 800 WVGA OLED touch screen
Platform: Android 2.1 with Google Experience and Sense UI
Internal Memory: 8GB
Processor: 1 GHz Snapdragon
ROM: 748MB
Storage: Up to 16GB optional microSD support
Camera: 8 megapixel with auto-focus and video capture
Battery: Up to 312 minutes usage time and 146 hours of standby
Tether: Ability to tether via cable to a computer through the VZ Access Manager
You can checkout the video demo of the device below:
In terms of features, the Droid Incredible appears to be an improved version of Google's Nexus One. Considering that the Nexus One was touted to be the iPhone killer when it was launched, it will be interesting to see how the new Droid Incredible compares to Apple's iPhone.
There is little doubt that Droid Incredible is a better smartphone than iPhone 3GS if you compare the hardware features. However, with the next generation iPhone and Sprint's HTC EVO 4G, which has also generated a lot of interest expected to be launched in June, we wonder if the new Android phone will be able to match up to them.
Based on today's breaking news and several speculations, Apple's new iPhone also dubbed iPhone HD will most probably include features such as front facing camera, higher resolution screen, higher resolution camera with flash, Apple A4 chip and more, in which case Apple's next generation iPhone bundled with iPhone OS 4.0 with 100 new features will be very difficult to beat.
What do you think?
