A lot of iPhone and iPod touch users never really use up all the space available on their device.
If you are one of them and would like to double up your iDevice as a flash drive, iPhone Explorer is for you.
This is a nifty piece of software for Windows and Mac users that offers an easy way to manage files on the iPhone. The iPhone Explorer application is free to download and offers the following functionalities
Drag and drop interface: Copy files from and to your iPhone using the simple click and drag interface
Folder Management: Create, Edit or Delete files and folders on your iPhone
Flash Drive: Use free space on your iPhone or iPod touch to carry documents like in a flash drive
File Preview: This option is enabled by default to make file transfering easy
The best thing about iPhone Explorer is that it works even on non-jailbroken iPhones. However, if you do own a jailbroken device, iPhone Explorer will be extra useful and lets you access the address book, SMS, emails, etc. from the system root.
The application works on all versions of iPhone and iPod Touch. If you are eager to check this out, click here to download the application for free. As always, don't forget to provide us with your feedback.

Cydia: Installer For Jailbreak Apps Gets An Essential Update To Improve Performance and Error Handling
Jay Freeman (aka Saurik), the developer of Cydia, the installer app for jailbreak iPhone apps has uploaded a new version of APT that has an optimized cache generator, which should greatly improve Cydia performance.
According to Saurik, the update has improved the performance by 7x.
Saurik announced:
"I also uploaded a new version of APT I've been working on: it has an optimized cache generator and more error tolerant repository parsing.
I improved APT's cache generator (most of "Reloading Data"). On my 3G[S], this dropped from 22s to just 2.2: 10x improvement.”
ModMyi adds:
“This means less error screens when connecting to repositories that might have an error at that particular moment, which used to end up causing Cydia users a ton of grief, sometimes even crashing them out of Cydia. This update should help correct some of that.”
If you haven’t launched Cydia in the last two days, you’ll be prompted with an essential upgrades screen as seen below:
Let us know if the update has made Cydia faster.

Categories: Jailbreak App To Organize iPhone Apps On Your iPhone's Home Screen Gets Revamped GUI And New Features
Categories app is one of the most popular jailbreak iPhone apps. It helps you organize iPhone apps on your iPhone’s home screen.
As the name suggests it allows you to create categories in the form of folders so that you can move the iPhone apps into them to reduce the number of home screens.
Developers of the jailbreak app have recently released a new version with revamped GUI and some new features.
BigBoss, one of the developers of the jailbreak app writes:
It’s been slow going due to my lack of time lately, but I have revamped the Categories GUI making room for some future enhancements and adding some things to it. We (ashikase and I, mainly ashikase) have also added some internal clean up code which will help on cases where the conversion did not go well from an older version to the latest version.
Here are some of the new features in Categories v2.99.4:
Revamped GUI to fit new features such as integrated "Hidden Icons" better.
Added more extensive help.
Added ability to hide icons (Poof) from within categories.
Added more rigorous methods to detect when older category folders were not properly converted (pre v2.27) and convert them.
Added logic to remove folders that previously showed up as NULL and couldn't be removed.
Reworked icon select screen so that it won’t crash due to low memory anymore. Now icons are grouped into folders. You select a folder and only view the icons from the selected set. Rather than viewing 500 icons, you only see some icons at a time in the series you select.
Restored the automatic pick-an-icon selection when adding new categories.
The bug where the “i” button in folders did not load categories to edit the folder has been fixed.
Here are some screenshots to get a glimpse of the changes in the new version of Categories app.
You can download Categories app from the BigBoss Cydia Repository on your jailbroken iPhone.
Note:
The Categories app's disclaimer states to "be very careful", and to "remove all apps from folders and uninstall before updating" to the latest firmware update, or if you want to uninstall the Categories app.
iPhone users who have not done this are facing issues as the apps that were moved to the folders are no longer visible after the update.
Let us know what you think about the new version of Categories app in the comments.

How To Extend Your iPhone's Battery Life [iPhone Tips]
Apple claims that iPhone 3GS offers up to 5 hours of talk time on 3G (12 hours on 2G), 5 hours of Internet use (9 hours on Wi-Fi), 10 hours of video playback or 30 hours of audio playback and finally 300 hours of standby time.
However, you might have observed significantly lesser battery life based on your usage pattern.
Apple has some useful tips on how to extend battery life of iPhone and iPod Touch.
So if your biggest complaint about the iPhone is that you need to keep recharging it regularly then you will find this article useful.
Here are some of the tips to extend battery life of iPhone and iPod Touch:
Heat can degrade performance of your iPhone’s battery. So it is important to keep the iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (including the glove box).
Set auto-Lock interval (Settings > General > Auto-Lock) so that your iPhone will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity.
Apple has also provided some tips to optimize your iPhone settings to extend battery life:
Use location services only when needed (Settings > General > Location Services).
Turn off push notifications (Settings > Notifications)
Fetch email or other data less frequently (Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data).
Turn off push mail such when you don’t need it (Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and set Push to Off).
If you rarely use Wi-Fi or in a area where there is no Wi-Fi coverage then turn it off (Settings > Wi-Fi).
If you hardly use Bluetooth then turn off Bluetooth to save power (Settings > General > Bluetooth)
Turn on Auto-Brightness to allow the screen to adjust its brightness based on current lighting conditions.
Dimming the screen will also help in extending battery life.
If you’re on the plane or in an area where there is no coverage then use Airplane mode to increase battery life (Settings > Airplane Mode).
Turn off equalizer setting to song playback as it can decrease battery life (Settings > iPod > EQ).
As you might have noticed, you can use the iPhone for a longer time to surf the internet on 2G (up to 12 hours) as compare to on 3G (up to 5 hours). So you can turn off 3G to extend battery life (Settings > General > Network and set Enable 3G to Off).
You can improve battery life by minimizing the use of iPhone apps like games as they prevent the screen from dimming and iPhone apps that use location services.
Apple advices users to update their iPhone with the latest iPhone OS.
You should also use the iPhone regularly for proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery. In fact, Apple advices users to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
The tips are useful especially when you’re travelling and need battery life on your iPhone or iPod Touch for a longer time, or when you’re running extremely low on battery and want to save power as much as possible for something important.
I hope you find these tips useful. If you have a tip that you want to share then feel free to tell us in the comments.

Reply March 01, 2010 at 07:22 PM jdb said in reply to Santosh ... Totally agree, and I even bought a case, with a small, 2400mah battery built in, AND a solar panel on the back. It was $44 on eBay. It's only about 8mm thicker, and with the second battery, it easily lasts all day. And if it doesn't for some reason, I let the sun charge it. Reply March 01, 2010 at 07:41 PM Duh! said... Apple May Lower Price Of iPhone 4G To Boost Adoption Rates
Apple May Lower Price Of iPhone 4G To Boost Adoption Rates
Apple may induce greater iPhone adoption rate among smartphone buyers by launching a new device that will have a lower cost of ownership - This was one of the key points made by Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty in a recent note to investors.
According to Huberty, one of the greatest barriers in increasing the iPhone adoption rate among consumers is the cost of hardware followed by the service plan cost.
Huberty believes that by lowering these costs, Apple will be able to establish a wider customer base in both the developed and developing markets. In her note, Huberty writes:
"We expect Apple to launch new iPhones in June that offer both a lower total cost of ownership and new functionality, potentially including gesture-based technology."
Huberty also believes that Apple's aggressive pricing strategy for the iPad could help them sell close to 6 million iPads in 2010, which is nearly double the number estimated by Wall Street Journal analysts. She writes:
"We expect Apple to ship its first iPad and announce additional content deals in late March to better than expected demand. We see the iPad targeting the sub-$800 consumer notebook market which equates to 30M annual units just in the US (120M globally)"
Last year, when Apple introduced iPhone 3GS, they had reduced the price of previous year's iPhone 3G to $99.
With competition from the other smartphone manufacturers heating up, the cost of iPhone is likely to be one of the key focus areas for Apple. However, we think that instead of lowering the price of next generation iPhone, Apple will reduce the price of current 16GB iPhone 3GS model to $99 just like last year, when they introduce iPhone 4G in June.
